Synopsis
KATHAKALI THAMBURAN Kottayam Thamburan – The Father of Kathakali
For centuries, Kathakali has stood as one of the world's most visually rich and culturally distinctive performing arts. Originating in Kerala, India, this classical tradition brings together music, dance, acting, literature, elaborate costumes, vivid makeup, intricate hand gestures (mudras), and expressive facial movements to bring mythological narratives, philosophical ideas, and human emotions to life through a powerful visual language.
Yet behind this celebrated artistic legacy lies a historical question that has persisted for generations:
Who played the defining role in the formation of Kathakali?
KATHAKALI THAMBURAN is a historical documentary that investigates the origins and evolution of Kathakali. Through a critical examination of historical records and long-standing narratives, the film revisits established beliefs surrounding the emergence of this celebrated art form and explores alternative perspectives on its development.
Drawing upon historical documents, ancient texts, literary sources, scholarly interpretations, oral traditions, and artistic evidence, the documentary examines the role of Kottayam Thampuran in the formative history of Kathakali. It also explores the cultural and historical significance of Muzhakkunnu, the village associated with this important chapter in the development of the art form.
The four renowned Attakkathas (dance-drama scripts) attributed to Kottayam Thampuran—Bakavadham, Kirmmiravadham, Kalyanasaugandhikam, and Nivatakavacha Kalakeyavadham—hold an important place in the literary and artistic evolution of Kathakali. Through selected enactments and visual explorations of these works, the documentary introduces audiences to the essential language and dramatic world of Kathakali.
Spanning history, literature, performance, and cultural memory, KATHAKALI THAMBURAN is an investigative journey into the origins and formation of one of India's most enduring cultural traditions. The film invites audiences to reconsider familiar narratives and engage with the continuing historical debate surrounding the evolution of Kathakali.
