Synopsis
Main Plot
A young fisher boy rescues an elderly luthier. The boy plays the flute while the old master plucks the qin, their melodies blending in perfect harmony, and the two become bosom friends bound by music. Later, the luthier passes down his mastery of the qin to the boy, lifting the youth’s musical craft to far greater heights.
When the boy grows up, he dwells amid plum blossoms and cranes, regarding the flowers as his spouse and the birds as his children. A plum blossom spirit takes human form to keep him company for a fleeting season before vanishing. In the end, he lives out his remaining years in quiet solitude beside the luthier’s grave, with only his cranes for companionship.
Easter Egg 1
The boy wakes aboard his boat and spots the elderly luthier standing on the riverbank. This scene loops endlessly, a metaphor that the entire life story was nothing but a vivid dream.
Easter Egg 2
The boy wakes on his boat and sees the plum blossom spirit waiting on the shore. This hints that life itself holds no inherent grand meaning; meaning is forged by loving the concrete, tangible people and moments around you.
