How to Pick a Film for a Mixed-Age Family Movie Night

Every family movie night has the same hidden problem: the room has more than one audience in it. A film that holds a 4-year-old's attention rarely satisfies a 14-year-old, and the reverse is just as true.

A few things to check before you press play. Pace, not just rating. A G-rated film with long, slow dialogue scenes will lose small children faster than a PG film with steady visual momentum. One clear question driving the plot — will she find the dog, will they make the team — gives every age something to follow even if they miss the subtext. A visual sense of humor reads across ages better than wordplay a 5-year-old can't parse yet.

When in doubt, pick something built for that gap on purpose. Festivals like ours program a lot of it: shorts under 15 minutes are a safer bet for a first family screening than a feature, because if it isn't landing, you've only spent 15 minutes finding that out.
