What the Selection Stage Looks For
The first stages check fit and basics, not who will eventually win.
The first reads of a submission happen before any award judging begins, and they answer a narrower question than people often assume: does the film meet the basic requirements, and which program and category does it belong in?
An eligibility review confirms that the submission is complete, that the production information and rights are in order, and that the technical requirements are met. Selection reviewers then look at eligible films to identify productions suited to Official Selection, competition or special programs.
None of this ranks one good film above another. It places films in the right context so that, when professional evaluation and Academy voting begin, every film is being compared with the work it was actually made alongside.
