Synopsis
Financial Education: Urgent and Essential is a three-episode series asking why a country where most families carry some form of debt still treats money as something nobody teaches. It moves from public and private school classrooms testing financial literacy as a subject of its own, through a communication scholar's account of how advertising trains children to want before they can pay, to a harder question, what closes the gap for people who never got that education at all. Economist Joelson Sampaio returns across the series to press the same point, financial education is not a subject for the rich to learn once they've already made their money, it is a survival skill for everyone else.
At Colégio Estadual João Caribé, a public school in a low-income Salvador neighborhood, ninth graders each pick a job for the semester, a banker, a police officer checking homework, then get paid a salary and have to cover rent on their own school desk. Principal Rosilane Gomes and teacher Eliana Andrade built the simulation from scratch after Brazil's 2021 high school reform gave schools room to choose their own elective subjects, betting that a country where over 70 percent of families carry some form of debt needs this taught as early as possible. Across the country in São Paulo, sociologist Marcos Nascimento runs a similar bet at PAC, a community program that trains teenagers from the Cantagalo favela for their first job. This episode of Financial Education, Urgent and Essential follows both experiments in teaching a generation the one subject Brazilian schools never used to touch, what money actually is and how to keep enough of it.
