Synopsis
In Nuh, Haryana, healthcare takes an unexpected form. Informal practitioners, infamously known as “Jhola Chaap” doctors, have become an integral part of the community. Jhola Chaap Doctors: Paradox of the Indian Healthcare System follows a practitioner and the people who seek him out, entering a world where medicine, trust and conviviality intersect.
Moving between the practitioner and patients, the film explores the role these doctors play within a healthcare system where access is not always equal. Amidst the familiarity of the steady rhythm of everyday life, medical care becomes intertwined with community and the boundaries between formal medicine and informal care begin to blur. The film traces the quiet relationships that have formed around an unconventional form of care and looks beyond the stethoscope, towards the people who make up this overlooked corner of Indian healthcare and the paradoxes that keep it alive.
