Building a Simple Portfolio Before You Have a Career
A small, tidy collection of your best work can show people who you are as a creator.
Start with what you have. A portfolio is simply a collection of your best work. You do not need a long list or a professional title. A short film from school, a story you edited with friends or a poster you designed for a community event can all belong.
Choose quality over quantity. Pick a few pieces that you are proud of, and leave out anything that does not show your best effort. A small collection that shines is better than a big pile of rough work.
Say what you did. Next to each piece, write a short note about your role. Did you write, film, edit, draw or organize the team? Be honest and specific. If you worked with others, name them kindly and give credit.
Tell the story behind it. Add a sentence or two about what you were trying to achieve and what you learned. Readers enjoy seeing how you think, and it shows that you are growing.
Keep it easy to find. Store your work in one folder, with clear names. If you share it online, ask a parent, guardian or teacher to help you choose settings that keep you safe, and never post personal details such as your address.
Add a short introduction. Write a few friendly lines about who you are and what you love to make. Include a way for people to contact you through a trusted adult.
Keep adding and trimming. Every few months, look at your portfolio again. Add something new, remove something older and fix small mistakes. Your portfolio grows with you, and it will be ready when an opportunity appears.
