Handling Feedback: How to Listen Without Taking It Personally
Feedback is raw material, and a few habits help you turn it into a better film.
Decide what you are asking. Before a test screening, tell people what you want to know: Is the beginning clear? Where did you lose interest? Specific questions produce more useful answers than "What did you think?"
Listen first, defend never. Take notes and resist the urge to explain. If you start justifying your choices, people stop sharing. You can explain later, if it helps.
Separate the symptom from the cure. A viewer might say, "Add a narrator," when the real issue is that they were confused. Ask, "What part confused you?" and treat suggestions as clues rather than instructions.
Look for patterns. One person's opinion is a data point. When three people stumble at the same moment, something is probably wrong at that moment. Choose your audience. Include someone from your target audience, someone who knows nothing about the project, and someone who edits or writes well. Variety reveals different problems.
Handle a festival decline calmly. Many films are not selected for reasons that have nothing to do with quality, such as a program being full or a different theme. Take a day, then decide whether to apply what you learned.
Stay kind in return. When you give feedback to others, start with something specific that worked, then name one thing to try.
Protect your confidence. Not every comment deserves a change. Keep a short list of what the film is trying to be, and measure advice against it. Revisit after a break. Notes that sting on Monday often make perfect sense on Friday.
