Your First Festival as a Volunteer: What You'll Actually Do

Volunteering is one of the fastest ways to see how a festival really works.

For many young people, the best first festival experience is not a screening — it is a volunteer shift. You see how a festival runs from the inside, meet filmmakers and crew, and often watch more films than a paying visitor.

Expect practical jobs. Greeting guests, checking tickets, helping families find the right room, handing out programs and setting up chairs are the core of most shifts. They are not glamorous, but they are exactly what keeps a festival running.

Be early and reliable. The most valued volunteers are the ones who arrive on time, stay until their shift ends and tell someone if they cannot make it.

Ask questions. Programmers, technicians and producers are usually happy to explain what they do if you ask at a quiet moment.

Keep a note of who you meet. A short thank-you message afterwards is how a one-day volunteer becomes a familiar face next year.

Volunteers under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's permission, so check the sign-up details early.
