Ten Questions to Ask After a Film That Aren't “Did You Like It?”

Open-ended prompts that turn the ride home into a real conversation about what your child saw and felt.

Skip the thumbs-up trap. Asking whether a child liked a film usually gets a one-word answer. Better questions invite a story, and they work best when you ask them lightly, in the car, over snacks, or while washing up, rather than as a quiz.

Start with memory. Try: What is the first moment you remember? Or: Which scene would you replay? These are easy to answer and tell you what stuck, which is often not what you expected.

Move to the characters. Ask: What did the main character want? Was it hard to get? Would you have made the same choice? Younger children often answer with surprising certainty, and older ones may argue with each other, which is a good sign.

Ask about the craft. Try: What did the music tell you? Why do you think the film was so quiet in that part? How did the colours change when things got tense? Kids notice more than we think once someone points them toward it.

Wonder aloud. Questions that start with I wonder take the pressure off. I wonder why they ended it there. I wonder what happens the next morning. Children love to fill in the story beyond the final frame.

Connect it to life gently. Ask: Has anything like that ever happened at school or at home? Do not push. If your child changes the subject, let them. The film may still be working on them quietly. Make room for disagreement. If you saw a different film than your child did, say so kindly. You can both be right about a story, and showing that is a lesson in itself.

Finish with a small action. Draw a favourite scene, rename the film, or invent a sequel in two sentences. A tiny creative task closes the conversation on a high note and gives the film somewhere to go.
